Save money and lower your carbon footprint with a Biomass Boiler from BlueTech Energy
Wood-fuelled heating systems, also called biomass systems, burn wood pellets, chips or logs to provide warmth in a single room or to power central heating and hot water boilers.
A stove burns logs or pellets to heat a single room - and may be fitted with a back boiler to provide water heating as well. A boiler burns logs, pellets or chips, and is connected to a central heating and hot water system. A wood-fuelled biomass boiler could save you up to £800 a year compared to an old electric heating system.
Biomass boilers start at a 12kW domestic version, which is sufficient to provide heat and hot water for a 4-bed house.
Biomass boilers burn biomass fuel, which is considered renewable. Therefore, provided that the boiler is MCS-accredited, you will be eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive that will pay you for every kilowatt-hour of heat produced.
In terms of the cost of fuel the average price of wood pellets is slightly less than the cost of mains gas while oil costs a little more. However, the price of wood pellets is likely to become more attractive going forward since gas prices have continued to rise in recent years, and this trend looks to continue. Biomass boilers are completely independent of the fluctuating import prices of foreign fuels such as gas and oil.
Also, if you are lucky enough to have a free supply of wood, then you can heat your home at zero cost.
BENEFITS OF BIOMASS BOILERS
Modern biomass systems are highly sophisticated offering combustion efficiency and emission levels comparable with the best fossil fuel boilers. Using modern technology they can operate at 90% efficiency which is vastly higher than conventional boilers and electric heating systems. Biomass boilers are efficient as they do not waste fuel and heat ash can be disposed easily. The CO2 that is created is equal to that consumed by the tree and plant matter.
Biomass boilers can completely replace existing fossil fuel (gas, oil, LPG) boilers and provide all your space, under floor and water heating requirements but can also be integrated with a gas boiler or electric fire. Assuming that Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) are fitted, then the TRV will shut off as the room is warmed up by the biomass heating system. Many people prefer this warmth as it is considered to be cosy.
Many boiler types require very little maintenance. Like any other boiler they should be serviced by a qualified service engineer. This said they generally require less maintenance than standard boilers and more general inspection to make sure they are functioning correctly. A visual inspection of the boiler and fuel feed system to check lubrication of bearings and to empty the ashbin will be required usually on at least a weekly basis.
