Benefits of biomass?
Long lifespan (20 years plus if properly maintained)
Low carbon footprint
Reliable fuel supply
Suited to old and new housing stock
Suitable for domestic and commercial properties
Eligible for government's Renewable Heat Incentive
How does it work?
Biomass boilers work by burning wood in the form of logs, chips or pellets in a highly efficient combustion chamber. Water is then pumped through a heat exchanger inside the biomass boiler and used for heating and hot water. Due to the efficiency of the biomass burn process, only a tiny amount of ash is produced which can be easily removed every few weeks. Smoke exits through a flue which can be either freestanding or installed into an existing chimney.
Is it for me?
If you have an older building with high heat losses then you should definitely consider biomass. They are reliable, sustainable and great value. However, there are a number of things to consider before you commit. Have a read of this article to see if it is definitely for you.
The savings on fuel, added lifespan of the boiler and excellent efficiency all make a biomass boiler a great investment when compared to oil or LPG. As an MCS accredited installer, all of our installations are eligible for the government's Renewable Heat Incentive, which actually pays you to generate heat. If the initial costs are an issue then an interest free loan of up to £10,000 is available from the Energy Saving Trust.
